Dr Esther de Waal

Historian

Esther lives in a small cottage in the countryside where she grew up in the Welsh Borders. Trained as a historian, she has moved into the area of spirituality, and has written widely on the Benedictine, Cistercian and Celtic monastic traditions.

In recent years she has become increasingly aware of the importance of the religious imagination, including: the role of symbol and image and the need to balance the visual with the verbal in our Christian understanding today.
